White poison

Health groups around the world are demanding sugar drinks manufacturers Coca-Cola and Pepsi to stop marketing sweetened beverages, citing growing disease burden. “Around two lakh deaths occur every year due to sugar related diseases,” said Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director Global Health India. While Supreme Court of India has mandated bold warning on cigarette packs to beware of the harmful effects, no such warning has been considered necessary in case of sugar. Though sugar has been found to be much more addicting and consumed by much larger population and is lethal. In a study it was found that rats chose sugar over cocaine i e it is more addictive than even cocaine. Consequently, the following has been observed:. (1) Sugar is a major factor in dental decay and bone weakness; (2) sugar in a person’s diet does cause overweight; (3) removal of sugar from diets has cured symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart illnesses. Way back in 1979 a journalist friend carried a column on ‘white poison’  by this author and since then the author and the journalist both gave up white sugar.

They have classified refined sugar as a poison because it has been depleted of life forces, vitamins and minerals. Its metabolism results in the formation of ‘toxic metabolite’ pyruvic acid. Pyruvic acid accumulates in the brain and nervous system and the abnormal sugars in the red blood cells. These toxic metabolites interfere with the respiration of the cells. In time, some of the cells die. This is the beginning of degenerative disease. Minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, and calcium are mobilized from the body and used in chemical processes required to utilize sugar. Gradually so much calcium is taken from the bones and teeth that decay and general weakening begins. It eventually affects every organ in the body. Initially, it is stored in the liver in the form of glucose (glycogen). When the liver is filled to its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen is pumped to the blood in the form of fatty acids. These are taken to every part of the body and stored in the most inactive areas: the belly, the buttocks, the breasts and the thighs. Kicking sugar and white flour and substituting whole grains, vegetables and natural fruits in season, is the core of any sensible natural regimen. Sugar of all kinds-natural sugars, such as those in honey and fruit (fructose), as well as the refined white stuff (sucrose)-tends to arrest the secretion of gastric juices and have an inhibiting effect on the stomach’s natural ability to move. Sugar is also believed to affect the immune system of the body, in proportion to the dosage administered.

The National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, recommends a sugar intake of not more than 20gm per day for normal adults –less the better. Stay away from items high in sugar e g soft drinks, cocktails, mock tails, energy drinks, ketchup, cream biscuits, ice-cream, chocolates, and desserts. Check for sources of sugar on the food label e g sugar, malt sugar, brown sugar, invert sugar, sugar syrup, honey, jaggery, sugar terms ending with ‘ose’ (maltose, dextrose, glucose, sucrose, fructose), corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup.

Other harmful white substances

Besides Sugar other white foods that have been labeled as harmful include: salt, milk products, meat, and white flour/white rice/potato. Use of chemicals, drugs, intoxicants like alcohol in any form and use of excess caffeine and even small quantity of nicotine do harm always.

Table salt (sodium chloride) is extremely toxic to the body, causing it to retain fluid in an effort to keep this poison out of the cells. The water retention adds weight and puffiness to the body. It could also lead to hypertension, heart and kidney disorders. According to WHO, salt intake should be less than 1 tsp/day. Avoid foods like papads, pickles, sauces, chips, salted biscuits, cheese, and salted butter.


MEAT contains white fat! This fat clogs the arteries, ultimately causing the heart attacks and strokes. Meat is also the culprit in causing colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and other forms of cancer.  Meat also causes diabetes, gout and arthritis.  Milk is also animal product. The only source of bad cholesterol (LDL) is animal food!

White flour is digested  in a matter of minutes. It is broken down into glucose (sugar) and causes high blood sugar levels. This is dangerous for the body, so the pancreas reacts by releasing insulin in large quantities to transport the sugar into the liver and muscles. However, the liver and muscles can absorb limited amount… after that… all of the excess sugar gets pumped into your fat cells. This is a major cause of fat gain nowadays. White rice has had all the good substances (bran and germ) removed during processing. This is harmful.


Some thinkers say “God’s Original Diet” of raw fruits and vegetables is the ideal diet for mankind? Remember Kand-mul of Ramayana days! Cooking of foods take away their nutritional value and may make them harmful. Approximately 83 percent of all vitamins are destroyed by cooking and the heat changes protein into a form that cannot be assimilated. Plenty of fibre is recommended. Constipation, indigestion, and hemorrhoids all indicate inadequate soluble fiber and fluid intake. Vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, cauliflower, red potato, and spinach, whole grains such as barley and brown rice, and fruits such as mango, pear, apricot, and avocado, and legumes such as red kidney beans, red lentils, and white beans are all excellent sources of fiber. Stay close to the nature; consume foods and grains in a more natural and least processed forms.
