Diabetic Mellitus (DM) is not just rise of blood sugar in the blood or its appearance/detection in the urine. It is a disease of the entire body from head to toe. It also affects the eyes in multiple ways-red eye, more cataract and glaucoma, optic nerve damage and more importantly effects on the retina; called. Diabetic retinopathy (DR). It is the condition of the eyes caused due to damage the light-sensitive tissues in the retina. This condition shows no specific symptoms but may eventually lead to vision loss if not treated well in time. After the vision is lost it may be too late-best is to get an annual checkup done from an eye specialist, even if no vision complaints. Besides examination with ophthalmoscope two tests are necessary viz. angiography and OCT. If retina is involved it will require treatment with anti VEGF injections  and or lasers, besides good control of diabetes and lipid profile according to Dr. Lalit Verma of Delhi.

Most people with diabetes aim to keep their A1C below 7 percent. By keeping your A1C number within your target range, you can reduce the risk of diabetes complications. Patients who did 10 minutes of exercise three times a day, five days a week at 85 percent of their target heart rate had a twofold improvement in A1C levels. Other measures to bring down Hb A1C include: use a smaller salad plate, Choose whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, adequate sleep and keep a record of your intake of food.
